Brand Name Throwdown: Globe Bulb String Lights

Since our last post on string lights was so popular, I thought you might enjoy a second dose.  For this version I've rounded up all of our favorite brands to see what they have to offer.  First up, Restoration Hardware.

Decor Look Alikes | Restoration Hardware Party Globe String Lights

Restoration Hardware Party Globe String Lights

Retail for $45

Now look closely, here's the version from Ballard Designs.

Decor Look Alikes | Ballard Designs Globe String Lights

Ballard Designs Globe String Lights

Retail for $39

Did you catch that?  Yep, I'm pretty sure that is the exact same picture from both Restoration Hardware and Ballard Designs.  Let's take a closer look, shall we?

The RH lights come in two sizes, both priced at $45.  The small bulbs are 1.5 inches in diameter and have 20 bulbs per 21 foot long string.  The large bulbs are 2.25 inches in diameter and have 10 bulb per 11 foot string.

Now let's see what the Ballard Designs version looks like.  There are 24 bulbs per 25 foot string. There is no information on the BD site about the size of the bulbs, but I would assume they are they smaller ones.

Can you see what they did there?  Offering slightly different versions of what is obviously the same product so they can avoid direct competition with another brand.  The best comparison here is the small RH strand of 20 bulbs for $45 vs the BD strand of  24 bulbs for $39.  Ballard is the clear winner here.

Now let's see what everyone else has to offer. Next up, Pottery Barn.

Globe String Lights

Pottery Barn Globe String Lights

Retail for $39.50 -$75

These are available in 20 bulb, 39 foot strands and 40 bulb, 41 foot strands.  No word on the site of the bulb diameter, but I'm thinking in the 1.5 inch range.  But wait! That's not all Pottery Barn has to offer.

Decor Look Alikes | Pottery Barn Oversized Globe String Lights

Pottery Barn Oversized Globe String Lights

Retail for $24.50-$54

That's right, Pottery Barn is really overachieving by offering 4 options in the globe string lights category.

These oversized bulbs are 2.5 inches in diameter and come in a 8 bulb, 9.5 foot long strand or a 20 bulb, 22 foot long strand.

So let's see what Crate & Barrel can bring to this (garden) party.

Crate & Barrel Globe String Lights

Retail for $34.50

Since it's all in the details, here's the nitty-gritty on these babies.  Each strand is 25 feet long with 25 1.5 inch bulbs per strand.

So between all the brands you can get from 8 to 40 bulbs 1.5 to 2.5 inch bulbs on a 9.5 to 25 foot strand for $24.50 to $75.  How's that for options?

Everybody’s Doing It: Glass Pendants with Filament Bulbs

I wanted to give you all a peek at what I've discovered since I started this blog about finding look alikes.  It's a little secret I don't think the home industry wants to talk about very often.  It's that all the decor lines, from the most expensive down to the imported knock-offs are copying one another.  Somehow I just imagined that Target was ripping off Pottery Barn, or Overstock was riding on Restoration Hardware's coattails, and while that may be true, Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware are doing the same thing to more expensive brands, and to each other.

Case in point: Let's look a a trio of similar glass pendants from three of the brands we talk about here the most.

First up is this guy from Pottery Barn.

Decor Look Alikes | Pottery Barn Greenhouse Pendant

Pottery Barn Greenhouse Pendant

Retails for $249

Next we have a version from Restoration Hardware

Decor Look Alikes | Restoration Hardware Modern Filament Pendant

Restoration Hardware Filament Pendant

Retails for $425-$475

And finally here it is from Ballard Designs

Decor Look Alikes | Ballard Designs Eldridge Pendant

Ballard Designs Eldridge Pendant

Retails for $149-$449

There may be some slight differences, especially in dimensions and finishes, but it doesn't take a genius to see that these are all basically the same light.  When one brand hits it big with a certain product, you can bet the others will soon follow suit.  So don't feel too bad about snagging that look alike from Overstock instead of Pottery Barn.  They are playing the same game themselves!

Flash Sale LALs: One Kings Lane Indoor/Outdoor Rug Roundup

Today we're checking out One Kings Lane latest flash sale collection of Indoor/Outdoor Rugs.  I spotted this classic repeating tile pattern and knew I had seen it somewhere before.

Kate Outdoor Rug, Red/Beige

Kate Outdoor Rug - Red/Beige

Retails for $25-$345

See.  Doesn't it look so familiar?  This has become such a popular pattern it's on everything home decor lately.  The border and color set this one apart from the masses and looky what I found at Ballard Designs...

Allover Trellis Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Allover Trellis Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Retails for $89 - $429

It was like a reverse look alike search, and such a sweet victory!  Let's compare a specific size so you can get a better idea of the savings.  The upper price on each of these is for a 9x12 size rug.  So Ballard Designs is $429 vs $345 at One Kings Lane,a savings of $84.  That's not bad, but it's not great either.  I was sure we could do better.  So I gave it a go at Overstock and this is what I came up with...

Poolside Green/Beige Indoor/Outdoor Polypropylene Rug

Retails for $32.99 - $259.99

Having trouble with the color change?  Here, let me help...

Vale Outdoor Rug, Green/Beige

One Kings Lane Vale Outdoor Rug Green/Beige

Retails for $25 - $345

Another OKL version.  Same price and pattern just minus that border and with a new name.  Once again, the biggest size for the OKL and Overstock versions is 9x12 and the price comparison gets a little better $345 vs $259.99.  A savings of $85.  Almost exactly the same savings as the Ballard Designs and One Kings Lane match-up.

So, if we compare the pricey Ballard rug with our Overstock find, it's a savings of $169.   Now that's more like it!  I'm sure if you kept looking, you could find even more look alikes for this rug.  If you spot one let us know in the comments!
